labor watch - j.t - A meeting held at Parliament on Monday resolved the dispute between the National Cable and Wire Manufacturing Company (CABLECO) and its workers.
The staff, who went on strike last Tuesday in protest against their "low wages", decided to end their work stoppage after their demands were met.
The company's management decided to increase workers' monthly salaries by JD40 during the meeting, which was attended by the Minister of Labour Mahmoud Al Kafawin, Electricity Workers Union (EWU) President Ali Hadid, CABLECO General Manager Mohammed Aref and some MPs.
"The company took this step, which will cost JD200,000 a year, to resume operations since we did not want to lose our clients," Aref told The Jordan Times over the phone yesterday.
Hadid explained that workers were satisfied with the company's decision.
"This amount of money will help them meet their rising expenses," he noted.
Over 200 workers began the strike last week, calling for higher salaries and cost of living allowances and enhanced health insurance coverage.
The Ministry of Labour had previously held several meetings with the CABLECO management and the EWU, but they failed to resolve the dispute until yesterday.
CABLECO, which was established in 1983, is the largest of six companies in Jordan that manufacture cables, providing the local market with 30 per cent of the products.
